I cannot doubt your experience. But consider this, according with the VW Parts List there are only two numbers for the lever 311 953 515 and 515 A. The only difference is the manufacturer and it states that there is no difference for model or options, parking lights, blinkers or not. the difference comes at the base of the column where the contacts are wired. Therefore I can only read that there are two switches and neither are preferable to model (non T-34). Have you tried to install one on the other column and it not work?
