This is a VDO speedo of course, probably > not the original one in a '66 squareback. The noise can be caused by either the cable or the speedo itself. My first guess would be the speedo. You need to remove the back and front and expose the works. You can usually work some grease into the gears without any more disassembly, which is good, because furthur disassembly can be difficult to re-do properly. If its the cable you usually can't pull the center wire out to grease it so you have to drip some oil in. > What kind of lubricating oil is best for this kind of > device? I have a feeling that it's something like that. In general, grease is a better choice for passive lubrication. Most oils migrate away too quickly to give long lasting satisfaction.
