A fast flasher usually means that one of your bulbs is burned out, 
you should check for that from the outside.  The second symptom is 
just that of a bad ground at the bulb that is working.  Rare for a 
71.

This would be normal for a shot ground strap.  It just can't carry 
the current necessary to run the starter without burning up the last 
remaining strands.  You probbly had lots of other problems that were 
related to this, too.
