Thanks to all for your the suggestions on tracing down my fuses problems. I received my Bentley the other day and tried each lead one-at-a-time on the #10 fuse till I found the culprit - the wire leading back to the rear window defogger heating element. I disconnected that lead for the time being. I also ended up replacing the emergency flasher/turn signal relay. The one that was there did not look like a VW part. I don't get the fuses blowing anymore. And the emergency flasher works just fine. However, I think I might have another problem somewhere... With the ignition key turned to the first position and the lights off, the left turn signal flashes at a normal rate. But the right turn signal flashes at a much higher rate. And when I put the lights on (either parking or full), the right signal just stays on - no flash. The left signal still flashes normally. In addition, when I then tried to start the car, I noticed sparks from the middle of the battery grounding strap. I pulled the grounding strap off the battery and the body and it fell into two pieces - very frayed and worn (no fuses blew). I'm planning on getting a new grounding strap tomorrow. My questions... What might be the cause for the turn signal flashing behavior? The Signal/Flasher Relay Part number - 191 953 227A - is the recommended item in RMMW for my Type 3 (12-volt, 3-terminal). Is it normal to get sparks like that with a grounding strap in the condition I described? I thought I read somewhere in Muir that if you get sparks from the grounding strap, you most likely have another short somewhere. Although I only was getting the sparks when trying to turn the starter over. Thanks, Richard '71 Squareback (on the mend)
