Don't let yourself get distracted into changing all kinds of unrelated things in a futile attempt to find what has gone wrong. It was right a few days ago; only those things which you have disturbed since then are suspects. Time for a > valve job? Always do a valve job FIRST on an air cooled VW. That is where you are most likely to have problems. Don't take a chance on the head of the #3 exhaust valve falling off and turning your engine into the gearhead equivalent of a tossed salad.
