Assuming this is a FI car the correct condensor mounts at about 5 o'clock for 68-71 (just CW from the points wire) and 8 o'clock for 72- 3 (just CCW from the vacuum advance canister.) These can be interchanged so you can use either condensor with any FI distributor. They do not interfere with anything, except that the early cap makes getting the 10mm wrench in there to adjust the timing a little more difficult. If your distributor drive gear is installed incorrectly you could have trouble, but the orientation you describe above sounds correct. It is possible that there is some other part incorrectly installed. Lord knows that there are as many creative ways to put these engines back together as there are inattentive mechanics out there.
