You probably can't damage the head, but it really is hard ³)No. A torch will usually not do much to help here. You should be able to get a 13mm box end wrench all around the Temp Sensor for a good grip on the hex. If it is in really bad shape see if you can get a 6 sided box wrench. If it is really stuck the threads (M10 x 1.0) will be shot. I was able to retap these in place on my 68, but I did not have the rear mount crossbar in the way on that year. The temp sensor was in that location for 68-9 only. Later engines have it accessible from above just behind and outboard of the #4 spark plug. Replacement heads have tapped holes in BOTH places, so you might want to look to see if your head has the upper location as well. If you have both, just cut the wire off the useless sensor and install the new sensor in the topside location. You may have the topside sensor boss and tapped hole and still lack the access hole in the sheet metal. In this case you can cut an access hole. Not an easy job, but you need not be fussy. You might also have the boss, but no hole, or a hole without threads. All variants exist. You CAN use either location with ANY year FI. Both points run equally hot. If you're lucky, you will just have a replacement head in a late engine with the access hole on top. Go for it.
