There are 2 things that can cause this.  One is a too-tight belt as 
you suspected; the correct size is 9.5 x 1000, I believe.  If your 
belt is too tight, you need to move all the spacers into the center. 
Perhaps that's what you meant.  On these cars since the belt only 
drives the generator, everything works well with a pretty loose belt. 
As long as it doesn't squeal, it's not too loose.

The other way this can happen is with a bad voltage regulator which 
is intemittently sticking.  This will cause the generator to 
periodically jerk back on the belt, forcing it into the V-pulley. 
Eventually this will split one of the pulley halves.

I have pulleys if you can't find one locally.  Try VW and NAPA.
