I fully agree.  What's more, make sure that you push the caliper pistons
back into their bores when you bleed things.  If the pads are worn a bit,
there's quite a bit of skanky fluid held in the caliper cylinders, not to
mention a bubble or two.  This has helped alot for me, from time to time.
 This will also help you determine if one of your calipers is frozen.  I
have heard several times of flex hoses clogging as they reach total
internal deterioration.  If the caliper on one side resists being driven
back more than the other, pay attention to it.

 I am a former VW owner ('71 9 pass. bus, '80 Rabbit, '81 Diesel Dasher
wagon) and an automotive engineer, of sorts, primarily experienced in
brake systems.  

Someday I might find myself a restored Type 3, but this isn't in the
cards for a few years yet.
