500 is too low to expect much in the way of oil pressure.

This is really not too low for a VW engine.  I think the threshold 
for the oil pressure switch is about 7 psi.

Gene didn't ever make his point really clear.  He just said that used 
cases put out lower horsepower.  If you read some of his other stuff 
carefully you will see that he makes the point that the engine needs 
lots of oil FLOW, but only the stock amount of pressure.

I don't know why, but our engines don't need, and never develop, the 
70-90 psi of oil pressure that some other kinds of engines get.  I 
don't think this is a problem.  This pressure is not what keeps the 
metal parts of our engines from rubbing against one another--that
pressure is developed hydrodynamically within the journal bearing and 
is not measured by the gauge.  Several authors make the point that 
all you need to do is provide whatever pressure is necessary to get 
the oil into a low pressure region within the bearing, then the 
hydrodynamic process takes over and provides the lubrication.
