Anyone going to the Terryville show?? Charlie? Im bringing the Notch, its first VW show, but only if its not too hot which leads me to my next findings.... I stuck a temporary motor in it from a 72 square, stock carbs, until I get the Berg kit built. This motor is rebuilt from a PO with around 60K on it so I figured on it being a bit worn although I drove it for a winter with no problems. It drives the Notch fine, powerful, but has the flickering oil light when the idle is turned down real low (500RPM). then I put the instrumentation on... The engine is SHOT! Oil press starts out OK, as it would, but once things warm up Pffitt! ON THE PIN! its OK at 75 on the highway, runs normal temps, even on the hills but once I got off the pressure was squat the the temp rose VERY fast, especially when accelerating back up to speed. My old square always seemed to change temps rather slowly as the Oil temp guage was on the oil cooler Tee (not the best spot) but gave a good average reading while the Notch, same guage and position, really changes quickly! it Maxes out at the hottest Id ever like to see when leaving the traffic lights. 14PSI around town in 4th... Geeze! Ya'd think I had Synthetic in there! ...and at normal Idle the oil light is still out (with the press gauge on the pin!) Moral?? a couple... first, when the oil light goes on you really have practically NO oil pressure at all, and secondly all can seem well even when the engine is pretty shot, although sometimes they can go around town for some time completely shot. Secondly... Uncle Gene was barking up the right tree when He blamed oil pressure problems on worn cases, I dont hear bearing noises when I start it up and the cold press is OK, Heck, unless I take it on the highway everything is OK but once its heat stressed at the higher RPMS the case distorts and wont return until it cools down completely. Ive had engines with worn bearings and they knock and rattle every time the engine is started until the press comes up, and of course they have low hot oil press too. Well.. soon this motor will be out and all will be well... Keith ------------------------------------------------------------------- List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list or mailto:help@vwtype3.org
