Welcome and glad to know that you're starting out with the right tools. For a beginner to mechanicals I highly recommend The Idiot's Guide by John Muir. Next on my list of 'must have' is either the Bentley or Haynes. Since you car is an early model the Bentley won't be as useful as the Haynes because the Haynes covers both early and late models -- Bentley only does the later (FI and not carbs). Part suppliers are limited when it comes the fat brother of the Bug. The VW magazine advertisers are a good starting point. For your purposes you may want to check out RMMW (Rocky Mountain Motor Works) as they specialize in restoration parts. Start collecting catalogs! You are in luck since one of our listees, Jim Adney, lives in Wisconsin as well and this man KNOWS the Type III.
