Both generators probably need new brushes.  On a generator a high amount
of current flows thru the brushes.  That is the reason the brushes are so
big.  When the brushes wear down from the armature spinning and the
current flow the springs that hold the brushes against the armature lose
their tension.  When you tap on the generator the brushes are momentarily
reseating and causing the generator to work again.  I hope that this
