I had the same problem in my '65 Variant and most recently in our '72 Beetle. It turned out that at the higher speed (i.e., higher fuel consumption), the engine began to starve for gasoline. That caused the sputtering and eventual engine stall (in the Beetle). The remedies? In the '65, I replaced the clogged fuel filter. In the beetle, I needed to replace the new, but Brazilian fuel pump pushrod that mushroomed at either end making it too short to adequately operate the fuel pump. If you have the disassembleable (is that a word?) fuel pump, check first the fuel filter and then disassemble the pump to check the screen inside the pump. There are ways to check the pump's output. Consult your Bentley manual for the proper methods. By all means, be careful when working with gas!
