So my question is....is this really a necessary device? > Does the car need this filter? or in Nico's words "is there a hokey solution > around it possibly involving ducttape and paperclips?" hehe. These all rust off. The best solution is to re-route the hose that went out through the fender wall down through the rubber plug in front of the LF corner of the gas tank. This vents the gas vapor, but not through the charcoal cannister. You must replace any metal lines in this system. They will be completely clogged with rust. Later cars use only rubber and plastic lines. Remember that you MUST have some way for air to get in to replace the gas that has been used out of the tank. If you don't, air pressure will crush the tank, really!
