Everything you said sounds right, stick the T into the oil pump inlet/outlet holes at about 3 and 10 o'clock on the pump. I had to bend one of the ends of the T a little to get it to even go into the inlet/outlet holes. (The real VW tool has curved ends on the T) The U shape goes vertical over the pump at 12 and 6 o'clock. Just tighten away and it will magically pull out. And if your new pump is wider, don't try to get longer studs and screw them in further to the case, they will shear off.
