I had to rebuild a distributor this past week that had a Pertronics ignition in it that I had installed about a year ago. While the ignition was still functioning just fine, taking everything apart gave me a chance to see things that I had not noticed on the initial installation. Pertronics supplies an adaptor plate with their unit which allows it to adapt to the Bosch distributor. If you look at the outer edge of this plate you will find a semi-circular cutout that is there to clear a bent over tab that is part of the Bosch breaker plate. Under normal conditions this tab clears, but the vacuum advance requires that the cutout be wider in order to allow the full vacuum advance. I had to file the cutout to provide adequate clearance. The back side of the Pertronics unit itself was too close to one of the mounting tabs for the breaker plate. I had to file part of the black plastic away to provide clearance. The two rivets that attach the Pertronics unit to its base plate have their heads set in recessed holes, but one of the rivet heads stuck up above the surface. This kept the base plate from sitting flat against the adaptor plate. After filing down the rivet head, I found that the base plate was still warped enough that I was unable to get it to sit flat anyway; I was unable to correct this, but it was still possible to get the ignition to work. The main problem is that the module is just a bit too large to fit easily into the Bosch distributor. There is probably no good reason why it couldn't be 40% smaller, but the design is done, and I suppose most of their market is for cars with larger distributors where this is no problem.
