The automatic transmission was first available in fall of 1967 in the
type III. It was the first VW with that option and a lot of people had
waited for it.
Especially in the US A/T's were already the norm and many people
wouldn't touch a M/T car. They had already lost the capability or at
least the willingness to operate a M/T. Also you can eat and drink much
better while driving in a A/T car.
The A/T type III was well recieved and opened a new market segment.
Looking at the local junkyards more than half the 68/69 type III's (I
only look at those) have an A/T. And it is a very good one too.
Nothing much can go wrong and a rebuild kit is about $75.
Used ones range from $20 to $80 around here.
Type IV A/T are identical by the way, except for the gear ratio.
I think the early type II A/T were also the same.
Martin, 69 A/T Square
