I am in the middle of a rebuild for my 72 1302 Cabrio. I also was thinking about an external oil filter until I read Bob Hoover's sermons on the issue. I came away from those sermons with the belief that the only way to purchase one that has the proper interference fit with the case is to go to a store armed with a set of calipers to measure and choose a filter that has a body large enough to interference fit into the engine case. Since I am forced to mail order here from beautiful Croatia and change my oil more times in the year than I go to church, I decided to pass and continue using only the screen filter as VW made them. Unless any of you have had better luck with the external filters than I have gleaned from the Hoover sermons, I intend to continue with this practice. Any ideas will be appreciated.
