Re[2]: New engine coming

Just like anything you read in a magazine or hear from a reputable source
you still need to 'take it with a grain of salt' -- take it for what it's
worth but don't make it the gospel, the ultimate truth, until you've become
fully informed yourself.

I, like some others on this list, am using a Gene Berg full flow system. I
have read Mr. Hoover's sermons and I can agree with various amounts of what
he says. But I gather that he is like most in that he knows the Type I &
II more than the Type III or IV. The Berg system will fit rather nicely on
a T3 and comes with good instructions so you can install the filter on a
disassembled or assembled engine (assembled requires an air compressor).
The success I've had with my filter has been nothing short of great! My
interval between oil changes has decreased by half (every 6,000 - 9,000
miles) because of the improved filtering and the use of synthetic oil.

In my blatant opinion and experience, Bob is wrong if he dismisses the use
of external oil filters! However, since I haven't read his sermon for some
time I don't know exactly what system he may be talking about. Those that
filter inside the oil sump are bad as are the ones that connect directly to
the oil pump and don't make use of tapping the oil galley.

GB does mail order, too :)

I am in the middle of a rebuild for my 72 1302 Cabrio. I also was thinking
about an external oil filter until I read Bob Hoover's sermons on the issue.
I came away from those sermons with the belief that the only way to purchase
one that has the proper interference fit with the case is to go to a store
armed with a set of calipers to measure and choose a filter that has a body
large enough to interference fit into the engine case. Since I am forced to
mail order here from beautiful Croatia and change my oil more times in the
year than I go to church, I decided to pass and continue using only the
screen filter as VW made them. Unless any of you have had better luck with
the external filters than I have gleaned from the Hoover sermons, I intend
to continue with this practice.

Any ideas will be appreciated.

John
