Being rather familar with these cars...(mom's orignal owner of a 80 diesel pu/p, i won a 81 pu/p and a 79 2 dr, mom also has a 81 dr..all diesel..:) I'd say that the 56 mpg figure is about right...for a 5 speed...more like 45 witha four speed.. As for making gas..Nah.
