Having fixed at least 4 of these units (for myself and friends...including my
'67 winter-rat squareback, I can honestly say that the number one failure
mode was the following:

The rivet that holds the male spade terminal connector being loose or
corroded. This is the rivet that connects to one end of the sensor wire
through the top of the sender. 

I peened this rivet tight on 3 of these sensors (supporting the back side)
and each time the gage came back to life!
