I have always assumed that the older setup had the hollow non-crush
steering shaft full length and ran the ground wire the same as the
later cars. But you say no slip ring? You mean the slip ring under
the steering wheel? If you don't have that then you need two wires
coming down the hollow shaft.
Are you sure early cars don't have a slip ring? Or was the one on
the car you saw just broken off like happens to them all eventually?
