I love Squarebacks!!

Hey all, a story to share...

My good friend, his wife, and their two small children were moving to Canada from a small town in southern Illinois, and they took a bus Tuesday to the St Louis airport with the idea that I would bring them back to my house for a final day of visiting, then take them back the next day to catch their flight. My friend calls from the airport and I ask how much luggage they have, as I'm trying to decide whether to go get them in Betty, or my 75 Westfalia. "Bring the bus" says he. Weeeellll, the bus is a little tricky in traffic, and a camper with an interior full of cabinets doesn't have as much room as you would think, whereas I can fit a whole dishwasher in the square, so I warm up Betty, remove my speaker box and head to the airport.
I spot them at the passenger drop off as planned and pull into a space, and here comes Dee and the kids with two cart loads of luggage piled to the sky with suitcases, backpacks, etc. Sheesh! "Frank is checking in the rest of the stuff" she tells me. That's good, cause we've got a real load here. The next 10 minutes or so are spent loading, stuffing, unloading, re-arranging and reloading, but I got it all in there with plenty of room for us to sit. The trunk was full and so was the back, but it's all in there. I take a nanosecond to admire my organizational skills, when I feel a tap on my shoulder. I turn around to find Frank standing there with yet another cart load of luggage. "They won't check stuff this far in advance, and it won't fit into the storage lockers." D'Oh!! I'm starting to attract the notice of the Airport fuzz, as you're not supposed to linger in the drop-off area, so I pull around to the park for pay area to recconoiter the situation. I could make two trips, but being a certified stark staring VW lunatic who actually bought Pat Boone's last album, I decide to at least try to fit it all in. Soooo, out everything comes and the whole process of loading, arranging, shoving (mind that headliner!) etc. begins again. It's kinda like playing Tetris, with squashable blocks. I still don't beleive it, but it all fit! Each passenger had to carry a child lap style, but nobody complained. Man, Betty was Down to the Bump Stops Loaded. Actually, she looks pretty good as a low rider,.and handled the load without complaint. Rode pretty nice in fact, and with heat too! We got back to the house and Frank took a picture. I sure hope I get a copy, as I'm sure I'll come to doubt it actually happened, the load was so unreal. Too bad I don't have a roof-rack, and I could probably move my whole house in a few trips.

Just shows to go ya, you can't hardly beat a square for all around usefulness. I love Squarebacks!!!
