The condition you are experiencing is called "dieseling". That means the gasoline fuel mixture is still being ignited even though there is no spark being produced to fire it -- similar to how a diesel engine works, thus the term. Generally in a gasoline engine when this happens it means there's something wrong. Unfortunately I can't remember some of the conditions that cause this, though the fuel cutoff solenoids help stop the dieseling. I have dual Dellortos with no fuel cutoff solenoids and I don't have a dieseling problem (never had one with these carbs but that is just coincidental as there are those who have the same carbs and have experienced dieseling on a stock engine).
