Hey Volks,
Looking through my "914 Tech Tips 700" (700 technical tips for the 914, 
duh) and in the seat belt section it gives advice to make the seat belts 
retract more easily (they're the same ones VW uses).  The one solution is 
what we've already covered and that's to use soap and water to wash the 
belts.  The next thing to do is spray the belts with Scotchguard(TM).  This 
allows the belt to roll up more easily -- it acts like a cloth lubricant.

I haven't tried the spray *yet* but will report in when I've tried it.
