>From Oz T3 Register This is a rehash of what I am told was unreadable script (General to some questions asked) sorry about that, having an Amiga computer, some of the characters on my keyboard must be different - Would appreciate if someone would let me know if this message is readable! The 1965 T3 Panel Van from Wolfburg Automotive advertized in our web page CarMart (from what I see on their latest ad. in Australian VW Scene) is now currently in their wrecking section so if anyone is interested in the vehicle as a unit, I suggest you ring them before there are too many bits removed from it. Contact Garry on 03-93703100 (Australia). To Bart Mertens Re T3 carbies - You can get DCNF aftermarket kits from Fast Freddy's USA advertised in VW Trends and other US mags, these kits are complete with two carbies, linkages, manifolds and air filters. Over here we generally use the Brazilian Brosol's which I am told are an exact replacement for the originals, they come complete with electric chokes and cut-outs - I have these on my T3 - Part nos. are: 114.317 G 5 and 114.516 H 5. If you are interested, Brosol also do a fuel pump replacement Part No: 05.313.065-8. If you get the Brosol carbies you will have to source linkages, manifolds, balance pipes and pancake air filter off an original carby vehicle although aftermarket single air filters flat enough to fit under the engine lid are available. With the original manifolds there are three types: 1 x single port and 2 x dual port heads. With the dual port head manifolds, I would suggest the very late type which have, rather than one, two balance pipes on each manifold, they work a lot better. To Pat Morton Re interior light - Over here T3's did not have an extra switch on the tailgate of the Square to turn on the interior light, normally if there is a switch, the Square has an extra interior light in the centre of the tin hinge cover which goes right across the inside of the roof from one hinge to the other. If you have contacts there, make sure the three position switch on the B pillar interior light is in the ON WHEN DOORS OPEN position and then just short across the contacts on the tailgate switch, if the interior light comes on, the switch obviously needs adjustment or replacement. (I mention Square/Squareback above as there are Notches and fastbacks with trunk lights) Someone asked - How can one tell if their T3 is 6 or 12 volt? The first 12 volt cars here in Oz were the early '68 models although I believe in other countries 12v was an option even earlier. Checking a few things out should let you know if your vehicle is 6 or 12v. See whats written on all your lighting globes, what's written on the HT coil, generator, horn etc.. 6volt wiring is always a lot heavier amperage and therefore thicker than 12 volt. Over here all the first T3 12 volt cars had a lightning sticker with 12 volt written on it stuck to the A pillar just below the interior light switch plunger. Ken Jones Re tail lights - A lot of people put the wrong globe in their lights. On early models with the smaller tail lights (to '69) top globe is the blinker (18w) middle globe is tail lights (5,8 or 10w) bottom globe is the stop lights (18w). They are all single filiment gloges with a single contact on the base - the above wattage applies to either 6 or 12 globes. With the larger tail lights ('70 on) top is blinker (18w) middle is Stop/Tail (18/8 or 10w) and bottom Reverse (18w). the top and bottom globes are single filiment and the centre one is a double filiment stagger pin globe so if you can't get it in, don't force it, turn it 180 degrees and try again. With the brake lights not working, if you've checked the connections to the light units and they are okay it's most likely to be the connections on the brake master cylinder switch, these often get pulled off or break. With color wiring diagrams - For those interested, there is a 6volt one in the Elfrink T3 workshop manual. To the above writer, there are 12 volt ones in the Bently manual. To the person who asked about Lo beam lights - (I am going by memory here as I deleted all my messages before I wrote this) Beside the obvious of blown globes, dirty contacts and blown fuses I noticed no one mentioned the (Hi to Lo) change-over relay. If it was the light switch, neither Hi or Lo would come on. Later models, at least back to about '68 had seperate fuses for left and right lights, the writer said neither Lo beams came on, so unless both fuses were blown, which would be unlikely, it would not be this. Again it is unlikely to have bad contacts on both Lo sides, so unless the wires to or from the change-over relay are broken or have been pulled off their connections, I would suggest you check this relay which on early cars is up under the dash near the bottom corner of the windscreen and on later cars, on the extension on the back of the fuse panel.
