One very practical consideration, given the high cost of synthetic oil, is whether or not your engine is a "leaker". One of the selling points for synthetic oil is that you don't have to change it as often as regular stuff...but if it dribbles out and you have to keep topping it off, then you will lose any economic advantage over purchasing cheap 30W oil. Right now, my Square is leaking oil around the oil strainer. That's annoying, as the oil smells (this is just "my two scents") when it gets hot. My guess is that most old VeeDubs leak oil...making the decision to use synthetics a little bit trickier. I have used synthetic oil in other makes of vehicles, but don't think I would bother to do so in a VW. But, whadda I know? I'm still tryin' to figure out how a brown cow can eat green grass and give white milk.... Best... Phil dillard@suu.edu
