Dearest Type III listserve, One of my favorite family photographs that I grew up with was the honeymoon shot of my mom and dad heading off for a disastrous camping trip (another story). There sitting in Dad's brand new '58 356 convert (just picked up at the factory in Stuttgart), smiling, mom's got these very very pointy horned rimed shades on, too cool! When dad met mom in Deutschland while in the service, (she is German) mom apperantly had zero interest in his sporty '57 Karmann Ghia. Dad's Porsche had the new roll up windows (luxury!) and the BIG 1600cc motor. After bringing over the Porsche to Kentucky, dad had to trade it in for a '61 bug when my sister got to big for the back "seat" (shelf). After driving his new bug for a couple days he brought it back to the dealer and complained "this thing steers all over the road". The response was "sir, this is not a porsche". Dad got used to it. One more good story. Mom and dad were at a party in the mid sixties. Dad , his "bachelor buddy" (mom's description), and mom had all arrived separetly, and they decided to go home to have a cup of coffee. Dad's Triumph TR3 and his friends Porsche were facing the wrong way, and by the time they turned around and raced each other home, mom was out of the '61 bug and inside the house putting on the teapot! Here's the best part of the story: Dad scolds mom for driving so fast (hey she's a leadfooted German), but the next week, dad and his "bachelor buddy" pull up to the house for dinner after work, and the local cop pulls in behind to give them each a speeding ticket. Humble Pie dad... Intro thing: My wife and I are 28 yrs. and expecting a little one THIS WEEK! I work as the R&D Engineer for a aluminum bicycle frame manufacturer. I didn't own a car for 4 years after selling my first car, (an '81 Rabbit that was hopped up with '84 GTi motor, tranny, brakes etc.) Instead, I rode my bike all over the city, except when borrowing my wife's '85 Golf. I'd been looking for a bug for a long time, and when we got pregnant, I learned about type III's. We bought Phillip from an aquaintance in December. I just get a kick out of our new "family truckster"! I know it's not a modern "safe" vehicle, but it now has a new master cylinder and rear seat belts (see, I'm trying...) This list serve has gotten me up to speed on working on my new car in no time, thanks all. Regards, Peter Parker '66 Square; Phillip '85 Golf; Lottie 8-10(11?) bikes between us! (my main transport still, and tools are METRIC!)
