It seems that we have started introducing ourselves on the list. I like the idea, so, here goes. I am Philip Dillard, Head of Technical Services, Library, Southern Utah University, Cedar City, Utah. Yes, I'm a Librarian, but normal in all other respects! Cedar City is in the heart of "color country". Our motto: "Sure, I guess you could say it's pretty...if you're easily impressed by spectacular grandeur!" This place is an outdoor heaven-on-earth... and only 3 hours from Las Vegas, where my wife and I go every couple of months to soak up the "culture". I got my first VW, a 36hp beetle, new in 1957 (paid $1608 for it...and wish I still had it!). Cannot recall a time since then that I have not had at least one air-cooled jobbie. Why? Because VW is the only car that a mechanical moron (i.e., librarian) like me can understand, work on, and maintain. As such, I see owning a VW as making a small principled statement that there is some part of my life that I have some control over. Yes, the influence of St. Muir is pervasive in my life! Besides VWs, another "hobby" is Gilbert & Sullivan, the guys that did the famous comic operas ("Mikado", "Pirates of Pinfore", etc.) I have published two books on these guys...my book on Sullivan came out last year. My wife, Jill, and I live on a 7 1/2 acre "farmette" ten miles outside of town... where I can line up all my T3 parts cars in a neat row without any neighbors screaming at me. We play at being "farmers", but mainly just like the peace and quiet and wonderful view that go with living away from town. I currently drive a '71 Squareback that I spent two years restoring, have a '71 bus ("Hitler's Revenge") which I am semi-restoring...and have just finalized a deal to pick up a '71 Fastback to restore for my wife. Well, I'm sure I've told you more than you wanted to know. I will end by saying that I feel a friendship with many of you on this list...even tho we probably will never meet. I look forward to finding out more about you from your introductions. Best... Phil dillard@suu.edu "I've got to be me...everyone else was taken!"
