This past weekend we all (my wife, myself, 8 yr old son and 6 yr old daughter) took our '71 Squareback into the mountains of Northeast Georgia for some camping. We packed the sleeping bags, tent and tarps on the roof rack, and everything else in the back of the car. The campground was at 3200 feet, but the main road in town was 2100 feet. The 2 mile road up to the campground climed the 1100 feet. Diane drove on the way up and flew up those last 2 miles...! When we arrived at the ranger station there were some old men sitting in rocking chairs on the porch and one of them mentioned the old joke about opening the hood and finding the engine missing. I replied with the normal punch line - 'But we have a spare in the back'. That night the entertainment at the ranger station was someone playing the banjo. I refrained from any North Georgia/banjo references, just be play it safe. One the way home Saturday afternoon, north of Gainesville, GA I spot a single cab VW cruising north. We both wave and then I notice there are about 6 other VW vans behind it with a Thing thrown in for variety! We all wave to each other. About 2-3 miles further on we spot another VW van heading north, and more waves across the median. Was there some sort of van gathering in the area this weekend? Dave
