In that case you should verify that both your vacuum and mechanical
advances are working. Here's what you do:

To check the vacuum advance, remove one end ot the hose that goes to
the vacuum advance on the distributor. Connect the timing light.
Start the engine. Point the timing light at the timing marks and
watch the marks while you goose the throttle. The marks should move
to the left at faster speeds and come smoothly back as the engine
slows down.

As an alternative, you can remove the distributor cap and twist the
rotor CW. It should turn with some effort and return completely on
its own.

To check the vacuum advance, connect a piece of hose (I use
windshield washer hose) to the vac adv connection on the distributor,
connect the timing light, and start the car. Point the timing light
at the timing marks and suck on the hose. The timing marks should
move to the left as you suck and you should be able to seal the hose
with the end of your tongue and have the vacuum inside stay good.

As an alternative, just pull off the distributor cap and watch the
points as you suck on the same hose. The points should rotate CCW
around the shaft as you pull a vacuum and you should be able to hold
that vacuum with your tongue just as above.

If everything's okay, and all your cooling tin is in place then your
engine is probably just fine.

If you have distributor problems, I can rebuild them.
