I've toyed with doing this, but I have not yet figured out how VDO
mounted the clock hands on their shafts.  I can't get them off, and I
even bought a clock hand puller!  Can you say teeny tiny two arm gear
puller?  It broke!

Of course.

Both are possible.  There is really nothing wrong with 6 V if all the
high current connections are clean.  I don't know if you can find a
large enough gel cell; it would need to be about 80-90 Amp-Hrs.

Put the Archer converter BEFORE the second battery and use it to keep
the second battery charged.  A gel cell would probably work fine here.
