These are surprisingly different; interesting.

        Didn't the bus get sodium valves also, eventually?

        According to Gene Berg, the fan hub on the 411 is turned from cast 
iron, while the 914 fan hub is steel.  He confirmed that the 311 hub was 
also steel.
I find it hard to believe that VW would use a cast iron part in that kind of 
application, but Gene seemed well informed and agreed that it was borderline 
insanity.

I agree that if one were going to do this, it would make no sense to bother 
with a 1.7 or 1.8.
