My manuals make no mention of prefilling or not, but they do say that if you
just remove the AT pan topping up takes 6.3 pts and a complete refill (from
a dry converter) takes 12.6 pts. I don't think there would be any harm from
prefilling, but you should keep in mind that you are going to have to stand
the thing on edge to put it in, so if you top it up when it's flat you're
going to have a mess.
The shafts that connect to it are hollow and ATF is normally circulated in
and out of the converter, and I assume that the rotation and centrifugal
force keeps it filled when it is moving. It probably drains back to half
full whenever it is stopped for a long period of time, like overnight.
The siphon is for draining dirty fluid OUT. It must be done this way to get
most of the old fluid.
My approach would be to just fill it half full. Just pour it in, and tip it
up on edge occasionally to see how you're doing. Quit when it looks like it
is about to start dribbling out.
