Side 3 would mean >left side (driver's side)...so why does is fit *only* on the right side >(passenger)? And what chassis is 2? > >Ok, so this is what can be said about the part: 1) Since the chassis is 2 >it was not meant for a Squareback, chassis 6, or any other Type 3, chassis >1. 2) If the previous is correct then it *does* fit on the right side of >the car (chassis 2) but I have discovered that it can be used on the >opposite side of the car as long as the chassis isn't 2 or a model of 2. >3) It is not even a part meant to go on a VW but it is for an Audi (it has >VW and Audi logos on it) so nobody can help me! Okay, sorry, I wasn't paying enough attention. 3) is right; the Audi symbol is the givaway. Audi and VW got together after our cars were made. VW continued to use the 3 prefix after the demise of the Type IIIs as the prefix of the Dasher/Passat which replaced the Type IIIs in 1974. The part you have is probably a Dasher part, but I don't really know. This is a common problem. Not every 3... part is a Type III part. Here are the retractable seatbelt #s from a Type III. Front outside: 111 857 705A/6A, left/right, they're different Front inside: 111 857 755D Rear outside: 311 857 709E Rear inside: 111 857 739D This probably means that the beetle used 3 out of 4 of the same parts. I don't know why they are not all alike.
