Re[2]: Type-3 Parts

Thanks for info on the part numbering, it's quite helpful and I better
understand the difference between body and part numbers, but it doesn't
answer my question.

First, I already have cleaned and lubed the whole seatbelt package on my
car, both sides, with very minor improvements. Second, I still don't know
what the second digit is! Following what you gave on part numbers, 323
would be: Type 3, Chassis 2 and Side 3. Type 3, duh. Side 3 would mean
left side (driver's side)...so why does is fit *only* on the right side
(passenger)? And what chassis is 2?

Ok, so this is what can be said about the part: 1) Since the chassis is 2
it was not meant for a Squareback, chassis 6, or any other Type 3, chassis
1. 2) If the previous is correct then it *does* fit on the right side of
the car (chassis 2) but I have discovered that it can be used on the
opposite side of the car as long as the chassis isn't 2 or a model of 2.
3) It is not even a part meant to go on a VW but it is for an Audi (it has
VW and Audi logos on it) so nobody can help me!

Anything you find will need to be lubricated. Try your own first.

The VW Part Numbering System

The VW part numbering system is extremely logical and was designed to help
make it easy to assign new part numbers as well as remember old ones. Each
part number consists of nine digits divided into three groups of three. You
may find it helpful to think of them in the following way: TCS-MSS-###.

T stands for the Type of car that the part was first used on, so it would be
a 1 for a Beetle or a 3 for a Type III.

C stands for Chassis, so for a squareback this would be a 6. If the part
was the same on all the type IIIs this digit is a 1.

S stands for side, odd numbers were for the left side, even on the right.
If there was no handedness involved S = 1

So if you look through the Type III parts lists you will find that there are
more parts that start with 311 than any other number.
