>From: wagen@pangea.ca >I replaced all of the fuel lines and saw that there was still a leak from the >oil pan... >Ah Ha! The oil is leaking! Is this coming from the joint between the engine and the flywheel? If so, them the flywheel lip probably rusted in storage and has ruined the crank seal. Yes, you will need to remove the engine to fix it, but it is not too hard. >There is still something I can't figure out. >For two days in a row at first I could get the engine running no problem, and >then I would shut it off. I could always get it to start and stop a few times, >but the time it took to start would grow longer each time until it wouldn't >start anymore. What's going on? > > I've checked the spark plugs, distributor, etc. and there was nothing >wrong. I also gave the car an oil change so I wouldn't have to worry about it. >I know I'll have to take the engine out and replace the gaskets amoung other >things, but I want to get the engine working before I do that. Is this the >right approach? I know I'm not much of a mechanic but I've heard that John >Muir's book is "for the compleat idot", will it help me to bring this car back >to life? Any suggestions overall? Is there still gas in the tank? Does the pump build up the fuel pressure to the right level, or any level? Perhaps your fuel filter is clogged. Is your air cleaner full of acorns or walnuts or dead mice? Ditto muffler. Books to consider: Volkswagen Official Service Manual, Type 3 Fastback and Squareback 1968-1973 published by Robert Bentley, Cambridge, Mass, 1974 ISBN 0-8376-0057-X / LPV 997 383 / VSQU Very thorough and complete, too dry for some people. How To Keep Your Volkswagen Alive, A Manual of Step by Step Procedures for the Compleat Idiot by John Muir published by John Muir Publications, Santa Fe, N.M. 1979 ISBN 0-912528-16-8 High in entertainment value, I find it lacking in substance. Since it covers all the aircooled models it lacks Type III depth. We need more data before we can help much more.
