FWD: Genuine T3 accesories and other stuff

I know there were roof racks, but that brings up another question.  We bought an 
'original style' repro rack from Parts is Parts in Utah which sits in the rain 
gutters and is around 4 foot long.  I've seen others that appear to bolt right 
through the roof.  Were both styles available from VW or was one a factory 
option and the other a dealer item?
