Subject: The Color of Propane -- Final
To All:
My straw poll of the List (see msg of 15 Nov) having come up with blue as the
most favored color for propane and thus for the tin-ware of a propane-powered
engine, I went a'looking for blue paint.
My first choice was a lovely sky blue epoxy enamel by Dupli-Color ('Powder
Blue - EP730) but when I inquired about availability I gained the impression
Dupli-Color spray-paint, which came with those niffty fan-spray nozzles, was
either out of production or had very limited availability.
But Rustoleum is still in business and commonly available. So I looked at
Rustoleum paints.
I judged Rustoleum's 'Royal Blue' to be a bit too dark but their 'Fresh Blue'
(Rustoleum p/n 7721) was suitable. Not as pretty as the Dupli-Color epoxy and
probably not as durable but VW engines don't spend all that much time in the
sun... or shouldn't.
So I've settled on Rustoleum's 'Fresh Blue - 7721' as the 'official' color of
the propane engine.
The engine will definitely stand-out in Grendel's engine compartment, which
will be finished in gloss white, stainless steel and native aluminum.
To reiterate a point that some still find confusing, those portions of the
engine that come in contact with the lubricating oil and can therefore radiate
heat, will be painted flat black. The tin-ware serves to seal the engine
compartment and to form the shroud that contains the cooling air. It may be
painted any color or even plated with chrome without having any effect on the
engine's ability to cool itself.
