One other thing dawned on me, when you said "Did I mention the generator light was on after I shut the engine off?"... get your regulator checked while your at it. It may have been the reason for the "Generator Bake-Off". Only the OIL light stays on when you turn off the motor. When the Gen light goes on AFTER the key has turned off the motor, it means that the regulator is confused and is trying to make the generator into a motor. (if your belt is loose, the generator WILL turn! Trust me!) If this happens to you, jump out, lift the back seat to get to the regulator, and pull off the big red wire (carefull it's probably HOT - temperature AND current). If done quickly enough, you will save wiring and generator. ... but the regulator is gone. New regulator time.
