If "boot" means the rubber elbow between the air cleaner and the
intake air distributor then cracks in that are irrelevant to your
problem, they just let in dirty air (which will cause entra engine
wear, but will not be reversable by just taping up the cracks.
I would check your ignition timing carefully and make sure the valves
are adjusted. I adjust to .004/.006 to give the exhausts a bit more
rest. Make sure both the mechanical and vacuum advances are working.
Pressure sensor is a possibility. The best test is to try a known
good one. That in itself may be difficult.
