When the pedal falls back like this the cable eye usually falls off the hook
on the end of the clutch shaft. I'm not quite sure what you're describing
in your post, but I think it will become obvious when you pull the pedal
cluster. The attachment of the hook to the shaft is quite good, and I have
never seen one of these come apart.
