I sent a private response, but I want to clear up a few things I've seen on this issue. You see, I bought the same type of resto project 4 years ago - 66 FB with T1 engine. 1. Doesn't overheat if T1 tin intact and tight. Sure, the airflow could be better, but it works. Drove mine from LA to Laguna Seca for vintage races (in August) at 70 mph+ for three years in a row, no problems (6 hour+ drive). 2. The engine opening on mine was not cut up, and doesn't need to be. This doesn't mean this other one hasn't been. Take a look. 3. I smogged mine every other year, no problem. 66 is the first year CA requires to be tested (buy a 65!!!). It is not legal, and I suppose the tech is as much to blame for even bothering with it. But good luck finding a tech who has a clue as to a 66 VW. As I said in my personal post, mine had a universal block, and for about $150 I bought the T3 stuff from a gut in the vintage VW club. I just put it right this spring, since test is due in November, and we have a stiffer law this year. 4. Disk brake first year is 1966, singel circuit, scary when not adjusted. 5. T3 rubber is not too high, compared to other old cars. Door gaskets run $60/ea, front trunk $40, rear trunk n/a (cut up front trunk gskt), windows $30 +/- each, pop-out gaskets n/a. Try Bill & Steve's in Bellflower, CA. They also have all the used parts I needed to make mine right. Usual disclaimers. The one message said it right - do you want to restore, or just have a basic driver? Of course, if any of us wanted regular drivers, we wouldn't be in T3 VW's! For a driver, little at a time, you can do it. I bought mine, drove it to work the next Monday, and only took it off the road for paint job. Otherwise, I drove it regularly. Of course, I spent some money, but in small increments so my wife wouldn't catch me.....
