Toby and all..

the stock 1500s in 64 everywhere and 65 in germany was a CR in the mid 8's
(aaron had the exact#) because of domed pistons, the fan was the same and
most of these engines burned up with the cheap gas which is why VW
stopped exporting the dommies in 65.

If you use higher octane gas a higher compression ratio wont run as hot as
it will detonating on the cheap stuff.

How high is too high?? how hot is too hot??  others can answer this better
but I know from experience that extended 70mph highway cruising will overheat
an engine with a marginal setup whereas round-town driving you may get away 
with it.
