My source is the VW microfilm. This is what I find under the descriptions
of the M numbers at the start of the microfilm. It is consistent with what
is shown in the pistons section where M240 appears under the 83mm recessed
crown piston and the other piston is referred to as "(twin carburetor engine)".
This is as close as I can find to your description.
M 240 Engine with recessed pistons for 311-368
low octane fuel
M 248 Automatic transmission
F - 319 500 000 311-318, export markets
361-368
M 249 Automatic transmission
F 318 015 226 - 311-314,
343-346,
361-364,
M250:
315-318,
365-368
M 250 54 BHP engine instead of 45 BHP engine
F 221 975 - 315-318,
365-368
Of course it is possible that the microfilm is in error, or that it was
"edited" at a some point, eliminating earlier references, but there is no
sign of that.
I have no personal knowledge of anything other than the late usage of M 249
to designate the AT. The AT engines had M236/M249 stenciled in large white
numerals on the black painted fan intake shroud--just behind the generator
pulley. (M236 designating fuel injection)
What is your source?
