My source for the M249 option on my 1964 1500 'S' engine is :
1. I wrote to germany and they proved my car was equipped from the 
factory with M249 option
2. My engine has the metal tag on the breather tower showing M249
3. My genuine VW Type 3 workshop manuals show the M249 option near the 
back of the book where all the specs are given (perfermance, bhp etc).

I can probably arrange to send out a copy if you like. Why VW also used 
the M249 number to describe the Auto trans later on is beyond me. Surely 
there are engough numbers available without doubling up.
