Re: Steering gear box adjustment.

Patrick,
No need to remove the gas tank. The steering dampner has nothing to do
with the freeplay, it's just there to help you from feeling any bumpy roads
you may travel. Its function is just like a shock absorber.

While we're on steering boxes... Has anyone successfully installed rack &
pinion to a T3? If so, *detailed* information would be appreciated.

3 People,

...
Last night while doing the lowering, we checked the steering dampner and it
looked to be fine - not the OE unit either. Thus, we left it alone for the
time being. I do have the dampner in case. However, from what the Haynes
Manual says, it probably is in need of a steering gear box adjustment.

What Haynes does not really point out is whether or not the gas tank has to come
out to get at the adjusting nut. It looks like it does not have to be removed,
but still, the space available for doing any work is limited. Anyway, IF anyone
has done this, and is willing to share their wisdom, I would appreciate to hear
from you! ...
