Use this notch since this is where #1 fires. > If anyone has a distributor and the notch is anywhere else, even at the > 8:32 position, it doesn't matter, the notch shows where the #1 cylinder > fires. Adjust you reading angle from there ;) As for the actual valve ...only if everything is installed correctly. All somebody has to do is rotate the distributor base, say, 90deg clockwise & then rearrange the wires by reinstalling them with a 90 *counter*clockwise rotation. Rotor doesn't move, and it still "sees" the same wires at the same time in the same order... but the base has been rotated. Also, I believe that a dizzy drive gear can be installed in the wrong position, messing things up. If you're *really* not sure, take out a spark plug and carefully insert a pencil-like object into the hole & watch it go in & out as the piston pushes it up & down through the cycles. (I still think that Jonathan's problem is probably that the "messed up" valves just weren't in the TDC position, especially since the car was running fine before he went to do the work!:) -Greg '71 squareback '63 Beetle
