I feel for you. I have a '70 Sqback and a '71 Fastback that have the Auto's in them. They too started losing third gear and reverse about year ago. Eventually third goes away completely and hopefully you are not too far from home because going above 50 in second is a little hard on the engine. >From my experience with them, there is nothing to do but rebuild it. The third gear ring/band is just worn out. My solution was to purchase used ones from the junk yards for $100 bucks. I struck a deal with the guy that if it didn't work I could come back and get a new one to try. On the '70 SqBack I got lucky with the first one. The trannys are really hardly beasts and last alot longer than the orginal engines did with there seperating head problem, so most of the trannys out there only have 60,000 on them. The one I put in is stronger than old one was. On the '71 Fastback I wasn't as lucky, it took me two trannys to get one that worked. You can have them rebuild for about $500 bucks. But I can drop the engine and trannny in less than two hours now and financial reasons at the time dictated the cheaper route for me. I know of a place here in S. CA that rebuilds for the price above, let me know if you want it. If you go the used route there is a seal that should be replaced before you put it back (very important if you don't want to drop tranny fluid every where you park). It is very easy to install. Let me know if you want me to explain that one. Hope this helps. ------------------------------------- Craig Woolston '70 Sqback '71 Fastback cwoolsto@ladc.lockheed.com
